WHO WE ARE
The Amherst County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office is committed to serving the people of Amherst County and the Commonwealth of Virginia through the fair and just prosecution of criminal cases. Our primary responsibility is to prosecute state and local crimes that carry a penalty of incarceration or fines exceeding $500. Additionally, we are the legal advisor to law enforcement agencies operating within the county to ensure justice is pursued with integrity and transparency.
The Commonwealth's Attorney is a constitutional officer elected to a four-year term. Commonwealth's Attorney W. Lyle Carver is serving his third term and brings over 17 years of prosecutorial experience to the office. Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Amber Drumheller and Assistant Commonwealth's Attorneys R. Clint Carwile, Adam Stanley, and Spencer Drake form a dedicated team of legal professionals working together to uphold the law, protect the rights of victims, and ensure justice and truth prevail.
Our office is managed by Jenny Hunter and Erica Hudson. Our Victim Advocates, Lauren Shelton and Judy Brooks, work tirelessly to ensure that victim rights are protected. Together, our staff strives to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and service to the citizens of Amherst County. Whether in the courtroom or behind the scenes, we are dedicated to fostering a safe and just community.
What We Do
The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office is primarily responsible for prosecuting crimes that occur in Amherst County.
Our Victim Witness Advocates can help you, whether you need to file a protective order or just someone to talk to.
We respond promptly to Freedom of Information requests for documents or records that are in our possession.
The Commonwealth is a party to every firearms and driver's license restoration hearing.

Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 3:6

A lawyer participating in or associated with the investigation or the prosecution or the defense of a criminal matter that may be tried by a jury shall not make or participate in making an extrajudicial statement that a reasonable person would expect to be disseminated by means of public communication that the lawyer knows, or should know, will have a substantial likelihood of interfering with the fairness of the trial by a jury.

A lawyer shall exercise reasonable care to prevent employees and associates from making an extrajudicial statement that the lawyer would be prohibited from making under this Rule.
