On August 24, 2016, Carlton Eugene Adcock was arrested by the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office after an investigation stemming from a report of child sexual abuse made in July 2016.  He was charged with 7 counts of forcible sodomy, 7 counts of object sexual penetration, and 2 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child while in a custodial role.  The victim was 17 years old. Adcock was held without bond.

A  preliminary hearing took place in the Amherst County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on October 24, 2016, and all charges were certified to the grand jury.  A trial was scheduled for March 15, 2017.  On March 8, 2017, a motions hearing was held to determine several motions in limine and other pretrial matters.

On March 15, 2017, a bench trial was held in the Amherst County Circuit Court.  After the presentation of evidence by the Commonwealth and Defendant, the Court found the defendant not guilty of all forcible sodomy and object sexual penetration charges.  The court found the defendant guilty on both indecent liberties charges and sentencing on those two charges was scheduled for May 9, 2017.  At sentencing, the Court sentenced Adcock to an active term of 4 years on each charge, probation for a period of 20 years with the first 2 being supervised, that he register with the Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry, and have no contact with the victim.

While the above charges were pending before the Court, the Commonwealth filed 3 direct indictments against the defendant for taking indecent liberties against a minor while in a custodial role.  These were returned as true bills on December 13, 2016.  On July 24, 2017, the defendant pled guilty to these charges and was sentenced to an additional term of active incarceration of 6 years.

In total, Adcock was sentenced to 14 years of active incarceration.
