Starting this week is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. During this holiday season, the Amherst Commonwealth's Attorney's Office is proud to partner with NHTSA in this important awareness campaign. In Virginia 2023 alone, there were nearly 7,000 alcohol related crashes, 293 drunk driving-related fatalities, and 4,400 injuries because of drunk driving. Thankfully prosecutors in Virginia obtained 14,246 DUI convictions during that same time.
While it might seem harmless, there is little you can do that is more dangerous than get behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle and hurtle down the road while intoxicated. There is no crime more likely to injure or kill a random innocent person than drunk driving. So this holiday season, plan ahead for a safe ride home, and never drive after drinking.
Below are a few links to help you understand the dangers of drunk driving and providing some suggestions for how to keep yourself and others safe this holiday season.
