The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is pleased to announce that James Lee Horsmon (47) was sentenced on May 28, 2025, on the following charges:

  • Abduction

  • Forcible Sodomy

  • Assault and Battery of a Family Member

These violent offenses occurred on August 25, 2022, in Amherst County in the National Forest. These were brutal offenses in which the victim endured physical abuse, threats with a knife, a terrible sexual assault, and the inability to escape her attacker. The victim showed her strength by standing up to her abuser and reporting the offense. She followed through with the prosecution of the charge even though it took almost three years and yesterday she delivered a powerful victim impact statement to the Court. She finally received justice as her abuser was sentenced for his crimes against her.

The statutory maximum sentence on each charge is

  • Abduction = 10 years

  • Forcible Sodomy = Life

  • Assault and Battery of a Family Member = 12 months

The Honorable Judge Michael R. Doucette sentenced Horsmon to the maximum on

each charge. He suspended the life sentence to a 50-year active sentence and all three

sentences will run concurrently. If the defendant is ever released from prison he will

have to register as a sex offender and be on sex offender probation. He is barred from

any contact with the victim.
