On May 11, 2019, Hunter Ty-Carson Shaw was arrested at the home of his then girlfriend for multiple firearms and narcotics charges. Shaw was originally being questioned regarding a shooting that had happened at another residence in Amherst County, when the investigator with the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office gained probable cause to obtain and execute a search warrant on the home in which Shaw was residing. During the execution of the search warrant, he located a firearm, ammunition, and methamphetamine. Shaw waived his preliminary hearing on July 25, 2019, and the matters were returned as true bills by the next grand jury. The defendant was also indicted on 2 counts of distribution of a schedule I/II for controlled purchases conducted by the Virginia State Police Central Virginia Drug and Gang Task Force in April 2019.

On October 22, 2019, Shaw pled guilty to distribution of marijuana, 2 counts of distribution of a
schedule I/II drug, distribution of over 10 grams of methamphetamine, receiving a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm as a convicted nonviolent felon, and possession of a firearm while being in possession of a schedule I/II drug. He was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison, with an additional suspended sentence of 115 years. Shaw will be on supervised probation for 5 years upon his release and good behavior for 30 years.
