Jared Matthew Martin was detained for malicious wounding, the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and 3 counts of brandishing following a shooting in a home in Madison Heights on December 6, 2018. Martin was a juvenile at the time of the shooting and had been a guest in the home of the victim, an adult male, while visiting the victim’s minor daughter. When asked to leave the home by the victim, Martin retreated to retrieve his belongings only to return and shoot the victim in his own home.
Based on the nature of the offense and his age, the Commonwealth requested that Martin be tried as an adult. The Amherst County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court certified the charges to the Amherst County Circuit Court on January 9, 2019, and agreed that Martin could be tried as an adult. Based on the victim’s extensive and permanent injuries, the Commonwealth direct indicted Martin on a charge of aggravated malicious wounding on February 14, 2019. A jury trial was scheduled for all of the charges on August 12, 2019.
On August 9, 2019, the defendant requested a continuance and the Court granted the motion. Defendant later made a motion that his court appointed counsel be removed from the case and new counsel be appointed. A hearing was held on September 30, 2019, and the Court denied this motion.
On October 3, 2019, Martin pled guilty to aggravated malicious wounding and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. On November 26, 2019, the Court sentenced Martin to an active sentence of 23 years. He was also ordered to be on probation for a period of 30 years with the first 5 being supervised and to have no contact with the victim or his family members.
